Quality childcare systems significantly enhance child development outcomes, boost women’s participation in the economy, create jobs, and drive economic growth. In South Africa, over 7 million children need quality childcare. Establishing robust childcare systems is not merely a necessity; it’s an imperative step towards fostering a brighter future for our children, and society.
Recognising this critical need, the Early Childhood Development Action Network (ECDAN) has awarded a $250,000 CARE Initiative grant to support this mission in South Africa.
Ilifa will be working, in collaboration with SmartStart and the Equality Collective, to devise and execute a cohesive advocacy plan aimed at ensuring affordable, high-quality childcare. This initiative uniquely integrates three vital agendas: early learning, women’s economic empowerment, and workers’ rights, all viewed through a systemic lens.
Efforts mirror those in Bangladesh and Tanzania, creating avenues for mutual learning and sharing of expertise in systemic change. The work undertaken will set a precedent for global childcare transformations.
